Today’s reading is the famous “You are the salt of the earth. but if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?” verse (Matthew 5:13) About a month ago, our priest discussed what the phrase “being the salt” of the earth might mean by looking up all the various uses for salt.
It’s an illuminating exercise. I encourage each of us to consider how each use of salt referred to on the website linked above can metaphorically true in our lives.
For example, it can be used to clean cuts, reserve food, quench fire, add flavor…. there are over 14,000 applications.
I always thought the phrase “salt of the earth” was just a boring way of saying that “you’re important.” Apparently not!
